Lofton Creek Records has just revealed that the McCain/Palin campaign will use singer/songwriter Pat Garrett’s new song “Moose Shootin’ Mama“, written about Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Released this week, the song is being played “out of the box” on Billboard and R & R stations across the nation.

Garrett’s label was quickly called by leaders of the Republican campaign and asked if they had permission to use the song, which will be used in various ways in the presidential campaign activities including websites, streaming, audiovisual works, and live performance.

Mike Borchetta, president of Lofton Creek Records, who signed Tim McGraw while at Curb Records, and was critical in the career of Leann Rimes, heardt about the song in a message Garrett left on his voicemail, singing the chorus. “As soon as I heard ‘She’s a moose-shootin’ mama,’ I just knew it was something I had to jump on.”

Garrett, who also recorded the song, was quickly signed to a deal, and the song was distributed to radio on September 15. “Moose Shootin’ Mama” is available for purchase via download or by CD single through www.patgarrett.com.

The iidea for the song came from an email sent to Garrett of a photo of Sarah Palin holding a hunting rifle, and a friend’s comment, “She’s a moose shootin’ mama!”

Garrett’s songs have been cut by artists from genres as diverse as the UK’s popular punk rock group, Arctic Monkeys, (”Bad Woman” 2008); polka king Jimmy Sturr and comedian Charlie Prose (”Suck It In” 2008); Grammy-award winning writer Hoyte Axton, and singer Tommy Cash, brother of Johnny Cash, with (”Old Timers” 1998).

I’m runnun’ out to get Moose Shootin’ Mama

U.S. Rep. Frank Lucas has introduced House Resolution 6942, which would subsitute the nickel with the original 5 cent coin used in the United States.

The 5 Cent Restoration Act would return to use of the half-dime. The half-dime is smaller in size and requires less metal to manufacture, lowering its cost and possibly saving the federal government millions of dollars, Lucas said.

“Fiscal irresponsibility seems to go hand-in-hand with the federal government,” Lucas said. “It’s time that we to find ways to decrease the amount of taxpayer money we spend each year. At a cost of 9.5 cents to produce and ship, there is a $58.5 million loss passed on to the taxpayers each year.

“This is one more example of irresponsible spending by the federal government and one more reason why our national deficit has risen to over $9 trillion. It costs the federal government almost twice as much to make the nickel as it is worth, and we cannot continue to spend that money.”

The half-dime, beginning in 1792, was one of the original coins used in the United States. In 1873, urged by powerful nickel lobbyists, Lucas said, Congress did away with the half-dime and replaced it with the nickel-based 5 cent piece in use today.

H.R. 6942 will be referred to the House Financial Services Comm-ittee for consideration.

Saturday’s incursion on Tony Alamo’s compound at Fouke marked the third time police have raided his property. In 1991, Alamo and his disciples vanished when U.S. marshals raided his complex near Alma in western Arkansas—taking with them the remains of Alamo’s late wife Susan, who had died in 1982 and from whom Alamo anticipated a resurrection.

The marshals moved in after a judge awarded a $1.8 million judgement to six of his former followers. The judge found that Alamo owed them money for a number of violations, including alienating the affections of two men’s wives.

In the incursion, marshals took 1,500 to 2,000 elaborate denim jackets to be sold off to pay $1.8 million to former Alamo church disciples who had claimed violations under federal labor laws.

Alamo disciples made and sold the jackets to finance the ministry. A 1981 federal court ruling had said Alamo’s followers were employees under the law and that they should be compensated at least the minimum wage, plus overtime as appropriate.

The Internal Revenue Service also said at the time that Alamo owed $7.9 million in taxes. He was ultimately arrested on tax-related charges and convicted in 1994.

As a condition of his release from prison four years later, a court ordered Alamo to return his late wife’s body to her family. A chancery court judge rules that if Alamo did not produce the body, he would be sent to the local jail upon his release from federal custody.

Susan Alamo’s body was eventually put in a crypt at Tulsa, Okla.

In 1988, California state officials raided Alamo’s complex in Santa Ana to take three boys and return them to their fathers’ custody. Justin Miller, then 11, told police that Alamo directed four men to beat him 140 times with a wooden paddle as punishment for minor offenses.

Alamo briefly faced a child-abuse charge but a prosecutor ordered that the count be dropped, indicating a lack of evidence.

In 1991, Alamo was acquitted on a charge that he threatened to kidnap a federal judge.

The Hollywood Film Festival will award special praise upon James Franco and Sally Hawkins as this year’s breakthrough actor and actress when it places laurels on Oct. 27. Both appear in top Oscar-contending films: Franco as Sean Penn’s partner in Gus Van Sant’s “Milk” and Hawkins as an unflaggingly peppy British schoolmarm in Mike Leigh’s “Happy-Go-Lucky.” “Milk” scribe Dustin Lance Black will also get a breakthrough award.

The Hollywood Awards will also honor “Doubt” helmer and author John Patrick Shanley, “Wall-E” and director Andrew Stanton plus the special effects supervisors of “Ironman,” John Nelson and Ben Snow.

The Hollywood Awards are co-chaired by Paul Haggis (”Crash,” “Million Dollar Baby”) and look to try to anticipate who’ll emerge as major Oscar players every year.

They usually do an OK job, but because the praises come so early in derby season, they can sometimes miss. Last year, for example, they appointed Ellen Page (”Juno”) as the breakout actress and Casey Affleck (”Gone Baby Gone,” “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”) as the breakout actors of the year.

In the top races for best actor, actress and supporting actress last year, they picked, respectively, Richard Gere (”The Hunting Party,” “I’m Not There”), Marion Cotillard (”La Vie en Rose”) and Jennifer Connelly as best supporting actress for “Reservation Road.” The Hollywood Film Festival has not announced the honorees for this year.

James Franco rules!

A Russian archaeologist says he has discovered the lost capital of the Khazars, a powerful country that adopted Judaism as its official religion more than 1,000 years ago, only to vanish leaving little trace of its culture.

Dmitry Vasilyev, a professor at Astrakhan State University, said his nine-year dig near the Caspian Sea has ultimatley unearthed the foundations of a triangular fortress of flamed brick, along with coy yurt-shaped dwellings, and he believes these are part of what was once Itil, the Khazar capital.

By law Khazars could use flamed bricks only in the capital, Vasilyev said. The basic location of the city on the Silk Road was confirmed in medieval chronicles by Arab, Jewish and European authors.

“The discovery of the capital of Eastern Europe’s first feudal state is of great significance,” he told The Associated Press. “We should view it as part of Russian history.”

Kevin Brook, the American author of “The Jews of Khazaria,” e-mailed Wednesday that he has followed the Itil excavation over the years, and even though it has yielded no Jewish artifacts, “Now I’m as confident as the archaeological team is that they’ve truly found the long-lost city,

The Khazars were a Turkic tribe that roamed the steppes from Northern China to the Black Sea. Between the 7th and 10th centuries they conquered huge parcels of what is now southern Russia and Ukraine, the Caucasus Mountains and Central Asia as far as the Aral Sea.

Itil, about 800 miles south of Moscow, had a population of up to 60,000 and occupied 0.8 square miles of marshy plains southwest of the Russian Caspian Sea port of Astrakhan, Vasilyev said.

It lay at a major convergence of the Silk Road, the trade route between Europe and China, which “helped Khazars amass giant profits,” he said.

The Khazar empire was once a regional superpower, and Vasilyev said his team have found “luxurious collections” of well-preserved ceramics that help identify cultural ties of the Khazar state with Europe, the Byzantine Empire and even Northern Africa. They also found armor, wooden kitchenware, glass lamps and cups, jewelry and vessels for transporting precious balms dating back to the eighth and ninth centuries, he said.

But a scholar in Israel, while calling the excavations interesting, said the challenge was to find Khazar inscriptions.

“If they found a few buildings, or remains of buildings, that’s interesting but does not make a big difference,” said Dr. Simon Kraiz, an expert on Eastern European Jewry at Haifa University. “If they found Khazar writings, that would be very important.”

Vasilyev says no Jewish artifacts have been discovered at the site, and in general, most of what is known about the Khazars comes from chroniclers from other, sometimes competing cultures and empires.

“We know a lot about them, and yet we know almost nothing: Jews wrote about them, and so did Russians, Georgians, and Armenians, to name a few,” said Kraiz. “But from the Khazars themselves we have nearly nothing.”

The Khazars’ ruling dynasty and nobility converted to Judaism sometime in the 8th or 9th centuries. Vasilyev said the limited number of Jewish religious artifacts such as mezuzas and Stars of David found at other Khazar sites prove that ordinary Khazars preferred traditional beliefs such as shamanism, or newly introduced religions including Islam.

Yevgeny Satanovsky, director of the Middle Eastern Institute in Moscow, said he believes the Khazar elite chose Judaism out of political expediency — to remain independent of neighboring Muslim and Christian states. “They embraced Judaism because they wanted to remain neutral, like Switzerland these days,” he said.

In particular, he said, the Khazars opposed the Arab advance into the Caucasus Mountains and were instrumental in containing a Muslim push toward eastern Europe. He compared their role in eastern Europe to that of the French knights who defeated Arab forces at the Battle of Tours in France in 732.

The Khazars succeeded in holding off the Arabs, but a young, expanding Russian state vanquished the Khazar empire in the late 10th century. Medieval Russian epic poems mention Russian warriors fighting the “Jewish Giant.”

“In many ways, Russia is a successor of the Khazar state,” Vasilyev said.

He said his dig revealed traces of a large fire that was probably caused by the Russian conquest. He said Itil was rebuilt following the fall of the Khazar empire, when ethnic Khazars were slowly assimilated by Turkic-speaking tribes, Tatars and Mongols, who inhabited the city until it was flooded by the rising Caspian Sea around the 14th century.

The study of the Khazar empire was discouraged in the Soviet Union. The dictator Josef Stalin, in particular, detested the idea that a Jewish empire had come before Russia’s own. He ordered references to Khazar history removed from textbooks because they “disproved his theory of Russian statehood,” Satanovsky said.

Only now are Russian scholars free to explore Khazar culture. The Itil excavations have been sponsored by the Russian-Jewish Congress, a nonprofit organization that supports cultural projects in Russia.

“Khazar studies are just beginning,” Satanovsky said.

When I first heard that Obama had chosen Joe Biden as his running mate, I was a bit shocked. But shock has turned into curiosity. Biden’s outspoken belittling of Obama in the past is sure to rear its ugly head over and over in the coming weeks.

Remember this one? “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” Biden said. So, according to Biden, normal African-Americans can’t speak well, are rather dull, are dirty and are ugly. It’ll be interesting to see how these 2 dance around that comment. What do you African-Americans think of that? Obama is the first!!

Another comment by Biden on Obama, “I think he can be ready, but right now I don’t believe he is. The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training.” Is Biden right? what experience does Obama bring to the table? I think Biden speaks the truth. If elected, apparently Biden has been hired to provide that on the job training.

Another Biden comment, “If the Democrats think we’re going to be able to nominate someone who can win without that person being able to table unimpeachable credentials on national security and foreign policy, I think we’re making a tragic mistake.” Is Biden right? Has his nomination a way to fill in those voids of inexperience? Probably.

Needless to say, this is going to be a fun presidential race. Obama is the “canidate for change” and is proving that point almost every day. He changes his position depending on the crowd he’s addressing. And I can’t wait for the debates. Obama without a script becomes a blithering idiot. And Obama, by bringing a member of the elite Senate club on board sort of blows away his “clean…oops fresh” image.

When I took vows with my current and only wife, I took those vows seriously. I’ll never have an affair, even if she’s on her deathbed.

Now John Edwards admits to having an affair with Reille Hunter, while his wife suffers terminal cancer. How shameful can someone be. Knowing he’s a public figure, being chased by the media, he does this to his sick wife.

I find it unbelievable that this kind of person can come even close to becoming a presidential candidate! Where has good judgment in America gone? I could read through this pompous ass from the beginning of his campaign. Why couldn’t the rest of you?

I had a neighbor who came down with terminal cancer. As the disease progressed, his wife decided there was no better time than then to start having an affair. She even told him about it. That’s just cruel! He soon committed suicide. The pain of slowly dying and realizing his wife was sleeping around while he suffered was too much to take. So sad!

In 2007, when he was first asked about the affair, John Edwards said, “I’ve been in love with the same woman for 30-plus years and as anybody who’s been around us knows, she’s an extraordinary human being, warm, loving, beautiful, sexy and as good a person as I have ever known. So the story’s just false,”

What a pig. Let us all pray for Elizabeth Edwards! We can end John Edwards‘ political career, but Elizabeth deserves our prayers. I can’t imagine how she feels tonight!

I can’t believe I’m watching this crap. But, I have a wife and daughter who insist on watching.

With years of broadcast television experience under my belt, I have never witnessed a more poorly produced piece of tripe in my life!

Tuning into a program like this, one named Last Comic Standing, I’d expect to actually see some quality stand-up comedy. It’s not there. I’ve never seen anything as pitiful as this!

And the comics voted off are a tribute to the idea of a republic. Thank God we are not a Democracy! The voting results of this show(?) are an excellent example of mob rule. Eliza Schlesinger was voted as best comedian. Who actually agrees with that? Sure…she’s cute and sort of funny, but the best!!

This is sad, but not surprising for Hollywood. They’re obviously out of touch.

What were the producers smoking? Such an obvious question. This is the worse television programming I’ve ever witnessed! I’ll never allow myself to watch this program again! (puke)
