July 4 Is Here…What Does It Mean And Should You Be Angry?

Yet another year has past and here we are again celebrating Independence Day. How many of you actually understand the importance of this day? Many of you are probably rushing out to buy fireworks or looking forward to cooking on the grill, with no thought given to the historical significance of the day. Party time!!

July 4th is actually a celebration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson worked between June 11 and June 28,1776 to summarize the political philosophy expressed by John Locke and the Continental philosophers. He set forth a list of grievances against the King in order to justify before the world the breaking of ties between the colonies and the mother country.

The Congress, with representatives from each colony, met in Pennsylvania. Jefferson’s summary was read and discussion began. A total of 86 changes were made to his summary. Then, on July 4th, a vote was taken and the “Declaration of Independence” was agreed to by the colonies. This while a fleet of British war vessels were docked in New York.

This is a day to celebrate the beginning of this great country.

So why do some berate this holiday? Look what has become of our government. Is this what the Founding Fathers had in mind? A government where our representatives hold their personal riches close while freely spending ours…and brag about it? A government that tries to slip through legislation with absolutely no regard for the will of the people? Money, deals, and pork spending is not what our Founding Fathers had in mind.

But, let’s step back from our anger a moment and celebrate this day for what it is. Tremendously brave men gathered to set the colonies on a course of independence. Every one of us should be thankful for their bravery; for without it, imagine where you would be today.

Ours is a great country. Sure our government is overgrown. I’m tired of the government sticking it’s hands in my pocket at will. But….I can still buy an apple for 5 cents and sell it for 25 cents. Free market economy is still alive and we should relentlessly fight to make sure that freedom remains.

Rush Limbaugh is a conservative talk show host syndicated across the country. You may love him…you may hate him. But, I ask you to read through an account of the day of July 4, 1776 put together by his father. It will give you reason to celebrate this great day. Then, go watch or fire off fireworks and fire up the grill. You’ll really enjoy this account! Click here.
