Let’s Abolish The IRS!
Posted by Edge on March 25th, 2007 filed in PoliticsOh goody…..it’s tax time. April 15 looms as those of us who choose not to let the government benefit from our money throughout the year prepare to pay our “fair” share. Some dimwits
actually look forward to this time of year. “I like getting a refund”, they say. Do you not realize the government has been earning interest on your money while you wait for that “refund”? Shouldn’t you rightfully be earning that interest?
Have you ever taken a look at your paycheck details? The IRS dips its hand into your pocket and grabs 25 to 40 percent of what you earn before you even see it. Are you an hourly employee?? Ever had to work more than 10 hours of overtime in a pay period? After 10 hours of overtime, the feds grab an even larger chunk, basically negating the time and a half you should be earning.
How about all these illegal aliens? Do you think they’re paying their fair share? No income tax, no contributions to social security or medicare. Yet, they fully expect to benefit from these programs.
What if we replaced (not reformed) our tax system? Why don’t we replace it with a system that will save social security, abolish the loopholes so many benefit from? We can do it with a system that’s fair to all.
Representative John Linder has introduced a bill, HR25, the Fair Tax Act, that will do it. The bill does away with the IRS. It kills the income tax, social security tax and medicare tax. We actually take home what we earn. For full details on how this would work, spend $11 and pick up The Fair Tax Book.
The Fair Tax is a fixed rate federal sales tax collected only once at the final point of purchase for new goods and services for personal consumption. Used items are not taxed. Business-to-business purchases for the production of goods and services are not taxed. A rebate makes the effective rate progressive.
All valid Social Security cardholders who are U.S. residents receive a monthly rebate equivalent to the FairTax paid on essential goods and services, also known as the poverty level expenditures. The rebate is paid in advance, in equal installments each month. The size of the rebate is determined by the Department of Health and Human Services’ poverty level guideline multiplied by the tax rate. This is a well-accepted, long-used poverty-level calculation that includes food, clothing, shelter, transportation, medical care, etc.
The Fair Tax Act places a flat 23% tax on all goods including food and medicine. Some question whether food and medicine should be taxed. Research has shown that the wealthy spend much more on these items than do the middle class and poor, so it would be unfair not to tax those items.

If the tax system was completely redone, there could be problems in the transition, but in the long run, it could be better.

Simmons,
Thanks for the comment. The Fair Tax Plan allows for this transition. I understand your concern, but this plan takes the transition into account. The change from our current system would be somewhat transparent.
The current state sales tax systems would accommodate the added burden of managing the federal tax.

hi Edge,
do you believe that the new system will work?
i’m not a tax expert, thus, have no comments on how practical to enforce such a high sales tax. i imagine it would encourage black market and smuggling.
another important question is on wealth redistribution function of the tax system. it’s impossible to rely on sales tax ONLY to redistribute wealth effectively (namely tax rich people with higher rate). not to mention that high tax on medical expenses could only enlarge the disparity of medical treatment received by the poor and the rich.

Good article on the “Fair Tax Act” as a replacement for the IRS, an organization I hate with a passion.
